Why 2020 Will Be the Best Year of My Life

Change. It’s what defines us, is it not? At some points in our daily lives, we resist change in its various forms. Changes in relationship, physical location, and mood are all common things that we, as humans, deal with on a daily basis. However, some forms of change can be beneficial to us, some more obvious than others. While a job change that increases your salary by 40% is an obviously good change, a death in the family would likely be considered the opposite. Despite this quick classification, you may not realize at the time that the death of that loved one will actually shape you and your relationship with God in the future.

This is where Romans 8:28 comes into play. It says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” The verse is very clear- God works all things for good, including change. Should change be resisted? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the situation. However, one thing is for certain- God works all change for his good, and in some way, change will be good for you or someone around you.

2020 is going to be a year of change. Every year is, after all. It’s impossible to go through an entire year without experiencing some change, whether to yourself or someone close to you. A few weeks ago, when I looked at pictures of myself, taken during the beginning of the year and then again at the end of the year, I couldn’t help but marvel at how much I have changed. Since January of 2019, I’ve grown another inch, added around eight pounds of healthy weight, increased my vertical jump by six inches, had a haircut (twice), and grown in many of my relationships. Truly, a remarkable year.

If last year is any indication, this year is going to bring a lot of change. Some of that can be told simply by looking at my plans for the future. In the summer of this year, I will be visiting Spain, then returning to the United States to attend a Christian school for my senior year. Both of these changes are massive, and we’ve hardly scratched the surface.

However, before change can be brought, goals must be made. If I want to get anywhere in the next year, I have to have some expectations. And so, without further ado, here are four goals I have set for 2020.

“Before change can be brought, goals must be made.”

1: I want to dunk a basketball. I know, I know, this was my December goal. Unfortunately, while I am close, I still can’t get high enough to throw down a solid dunk. Doing so would require at least a six-inch increase in my vertical jump. So, in preparation for some real competition in the USA, I am going to work as hard as I can until I can throw down a legitimate dunk.

2: I want Africa Boy to reach 1,000 followers. Ambitious, of course, considering that I only have 291 followers at the time of this post and my blog has only existed for 10 months. However, I’ve found something extremely interesting. When I started to seriously post on Africa Boy, it took me four months to reach 100 followers, averaging around 4 followers per business week. Then, it took me three months to hit 200, averaging around 6 followers per business week. Now, assuming I hit 300 within the next week, it will have taken 2 months to hit 300, averaging almost 2 followers a day. Not bad, and the numbers are improving. At this rate, I should reach 1,000 before November, 2020.

3: I want to finish my upcoming novel, The Last Swordsman. Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen circumstances in both our personal and academic lives, co-authors Beau Henneman, Karleigh Provost and I have been forced to slow production of the novel. Hopefully, it will be finished before December of 2020.

4: I want to grow in my relationships with God, my family, and my friends (in that order). This is an obvious answer from a Christian, but a necessary one. Without a prior commitment to growth, a Christian may find it difficult to mature at a normal rate. Setting expectations to grow in relationship with both Christ and family is an excellent thing to do, especially at the beginning of the year.

Alright, that’s all for now. I will, of course, get back to this in six months, and again in a year. I want to see all four of these goals completed and pray that I will be able to finish them soon.

  2. Those are great goals, Elisha! I had no idea you were writing a book – that’s awesome! I hope that the writing process goes smoothly for you and your co-authors throughout the year!

Great Goals! How high is your vertical right now without the ball in your hands? It takes time to get the vertical up to where it needs to be, so don’t give up. (I can’t dunk yet either:( I need a couple more inches.) I am looking forward to your book as well.

Wow! Hope you get your goals done!

That book sounds cool! I would love to read it right now, or even when it’s done if you’re allowing that.

    1. Absolutely! Currently, we only have around a dozen chapters, which is about a quarter of what the total book should amount to. When it’s done, it’ll be published on Kindle store so you can def read it!

  5. Awesome post, Elisha! Those are great goals, as well! One of my main goals for this year is to qualify for the National Bible Bee. My goodness, it is so awesome! My intention for meeting this goal is to do a lot of studying and memorizing. It sounds a tad challenging, but I know I can get through it with the Lord’s help. We will see what happens!
