Content. Isn’t that a word that we hear so often? In a world of decreasing creativity, content is king. The best bloggers find ways to constantly create new content, publishing dozens of unique posts a year. In fact, the #1 defining feature between low-level bloggers and high-level bloggers is content.
The most common blog-related questions I receive have to do with content. After all, it’s hard to consistently come up with content, isn’t it? Well, here are three ways you can easily come up with new content prior to writing your post.
1: Find Your Niche
Before you start looking for outstanding content, first identify your niche. Knowing your niche will make finding content much, much easier. For instance, let’s pretend that you are writing about your cat. All of your posts center around Puss and her cute, adorable antics, so thousands of adoring fans flock to your website. Thinking through what your site is mostly focused on will give you your niche; in this case, it would be cats.
2: Use Generators
One of the easiest ways to come up with content is with a generator. Once you know your niche, you will be able to search and find content ideas much faster. Using the previous example, let’s say that you want an idea for your cat blog. So, you go to Portent‘s Title Maker and enter “cats”. Portent will immediately give you an unlimited supply of title ideas, and even though they may end up as your final title, the suggestions can prove very helpful for inspiration. Another generator you can use is BuzzSumo, found here. With BuzzSumo, you can enter a keyword or niche and immediately see a list of articles relating to your search. Unfortunately, you can’t filter the articles, so what you see is what you get. You will see articles released in the last year, but none in the past two months: you have to have a Premium trial to see those. Despite the obvious inadequacies of BuzzSumo free, there are still one advantage: despite the age of the article, it could still provide inspiration, even if it’s slightly outdated.
3: Search Social Media
An easy way to find what’s trending is through using Quora. Simply type in your niche and voila! You have a long list of recent, upvoted articles or discussions. On Quora, people ask questions, so reading those questions is an easy way to find problems or questions related to your niche.
Reddit is another easy way to find content. There, you can find brand-new discussions on the most recent, popular news. Through entering your niche’s keyword (ie. cats, using the last example) will give you the most recent, popular articles or discussions about that topic.
4: Use Ubersuggest
Neil Patel is currently considered one of the leading authorities on SEO and blogging content. His new, easy-to-use tool Ubersuggest allows you to enter a competitor’s name and see a list of their most popular, backlinked articles. In my case, I might enter the link of Ariana’s Archives, one of my competitors. Then, I would see a list of her most popular articles by views or backlinks. This would help me find what, in her case, has been her most successful articles. Then, I could write my own, better post (although, in Ariana’s case, that would be difficult), hoping that mine will be just as popular.
5: No Idea is a Bad Idea
Easily the best tool for finding post ideas is by writing them down for later. I often carry a notebook with me, and if a new post idea hits me, I immediately write it down. As of right now, my book has over a dozen post ideas in it, ready to be called back if I need inspiration. Carry a notebook or slip of paper with you whenever you anticipate going to a boring meeting or church service (not that Church is boring, of course). Then, if you are feeling particularly bored, brainstorm new ideas for your blog and write them down. During one particularly long *cough* church service *cough*, I managed to come up with no less than 9 individual blog post ideas.
Now, make sure that you remember to write every idea down. Even seemingly bad ideas could have a purpose in the future. What seemed like a horrible idea now may actually be an interesting idea in six months, so make sure to never discard an idea just because it may be boring or difficult.
By this point, you probably have well over a dozen new content ideas. If not, then keep thinking. It’ll come to you sooner or later. Now, as you’re writing the post, be sure to keep a few things in mind.
Firstly, try to make evergreen content. Evergreen content is content that never grows old or boring- it should be relevant in ten years, regardless of who finds it. If you’re writing a post about current sports results, that may be relevant now, but who’s going to want to read about that in 2029? I wouldn’t. Instead, be sure to write about things that will still be readable in ten years.
Create long content. Only a few people might want to read a sixty-word article about your sick cat, but if you wrote an in-depth, 2,000-word article about cat diseases and how they affect us, you can expect to receive plenty of traffic from that post in particular.
Insert at least one image. In a world of ADHD people, it’s rather hard to read through a 2,000-word article without some kind of eye-relief. Always make sure that your article has at least one relevant picture in it.
Keep the post relevant to your audience and part of your niche. If you have a blog about cats, you obviously wouldn’t publish a random post about watermelon. At least, not without a little warning and explanation. Try to keep your posts relevant to your particular audience and similar to your niche. So, using the cat illustration, try to publish a post that all cat-lovers would enjoy and make sure that it has at least something to do with cats.
