Current Events: Hurricane Dorian’s Effect “Total Devastation”

Hurricane-PixTeller

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last week, you’ve been hearing numerous reports of Hurricane Dorian. News of death counts and destruction are sweeping the nation (Oh, sorry. Bad pun.), with stories of massive swaths of devastation. Currently, the death count stands at thirty but is expected to nearly triple over the course of the next few days. According to BBC News, The International Red Cross predicted that over 40% of the homes in the Bahamas and Abacos were seriously damaged or demolished. Not only have many government buildings been destroyed, but the only International Airport in the area was also destroyed, potentially grounding flights for the next few months.

The International Red Cross, United Nations, and US Coast Guard have all been working together to provide aid and relief. Because of an estimated 80,000 displaced people, the USA has been flying in several tons of food and other equipment.

Now, I have only paraphrased what I have learned. This isn’t a news article, after all. I simply wanted to give a taste of what’s going on in the Bahamas. The article I took much of my information from can be found here if you’re interested in finding out all of the details.

No matter what corner of the world you live in, we need to pray for the people suffering from this hurricane. Many cite their absence from the crisis as their reason for ignorance or unfeeling, but many of us are touched in some way. Several of my close friends and family members were recently evacuated from Florida and South Carolina to the north, where they can find safety and shelter. Because I feel as if I have a personal stake in this, I have been praying for the evacuees and refugees for several days now. Guys, this is a serious event, and our prayers need to go out to the people of the Bahamas, Abacos, Florida, and South Carolina.

That’s all for today. This post seemed rather strange, considering my last post was extremely long. Regardless, thanks for reading, and I hope you have a great day! If you haven’t already, make sure to click that Follow button on the side.

  1. Oooooh. Dorian has totally been very destructive. I had no idea the death count was over 30 now! Last I heard was 20. It’s soooooo sad.
I live in South Carolina near the coast, and we experienced Dorian’s fury yesterday. It was rough.
